Smooth snake babies in the Kalmthoutse heide

Nature restoration for the Smooth snake pays off!

Belgium has three indigenous species of snake, including the smooth snake. This species can only be found in a few places due to the loss of suitable habitat. On the Kalmthoutse Heide, Nature and Forests does everything in its power to accommodate the smooth snake, as you can see here in the video from the ‘Our Nature’ project.

Within the LIFE BNIP project, project partner Natuurpunt takes very specific actions for the smooth snake in nature reserve the Rode Del in Arendonk. 4 hectares of heathland were restored, by excavating the top layer of soil, removing unwanted vegetation and the grazing of a flock of sheep. This means more heather and that’s great news for the smooth snake!
