Look out over the ’Ballewijers’

The call for the BNIP pilot projects in 2017 was a success and resulted in eight small-scale inspiring projects. In almost 2 years’ time these projects achieved great things.

Read here what Limburgs landschap has realised.

Limburgs landscape vzw increases visibility of a hidden pearl of nature

Over the years the Ballewijers pond complex has been almost completely enclosed by buildings. It has become a disturbance prone resting place for many animals, near the centre of Zonhoven. The area, which has a great deal of natural potential, was used as a dumping ground for garden waste and litter. The pilot project of Limburgs landschap vzw has brought the natural beauty of this area to the attention of the public once again.

The project:

  • Creates awareness amongst the local residents about the rare nature found in their backyards and how they themselves can contribute.
  • Contributes to an accessible nature experience by restoring the view over the Ballewijer ponds and placing a viewing platform that is also accessible for wheelchair users.
  • Increases communication and education about Natura 2000 by installing information panels and organising an information moment for all the local residents.

The viewing platform and information panels will also be used for future communication actions about the nature reserve. The viewing platform is just the tip of the iceberg: Limburgs landschap vzw is even thinking of submitting its own LIFE project, which focuses on the Natura 2000 nature reserve the Ballewijers.
